Barren

These past few weeks I've resolved to paint mostly by hand again and without too many photo textures, it's a lot more fun and surprisingly faster. It helps me not worry too much about getting everything realistic and I have more freedom to play around. Painting mostly by hand has also made me not use too many layers at once which is a definite plus. I realized though I use a similar composition in almost all my environments, which sucks!

Environments!

Series of monochromatic (kinda) environment sketches done during the weekend. Was aiming for 5 and barely finished these 4, got caught up playing LoL..

Egos

This is sort of a directionless painting; can't seem to muster up the energy to think about design!

FMA

Late night sketch; a tribute to one of my favorite anime of alllll timmmee, Fullmetal Alchemist!

As a side note.. Dang, I find myself pretty busy these days! Not as busy as when I'm in school of course, but pretty preoccupied nonetheless. Recently acquired an internship at Section Studios (yay!) and spend my time there most of the week, more exhausting then I expected haha. On top of that I still have homework! During break!! WHY!

Ancient Guardian

Painted over one of my old perspective drawings, the drawing in question can be seen here: Original Drawing

Wanted to paint something, but was feeling uninspired; thankfully I had some linework from the past I could dig up and paint over!

Malphite sketch and new online portfolio

I want to start keeping this blog a blog and keep it casual instead of the stuffy kind of pseudo-portfolio thing that I've been using it for. My new online portfolio can be found here: Portfolio

Anywho, this is a sketch of Malphite from League of Legends I did for my brother who's a huge LoL fan and enjoys using this character in the game. Not my usual cup of tea since I don't like leaving paintings so messy, but I don't want this painting to catch dust sitting on my desktop since I'm not going to work on it anymore.

Hopefully will have very recurring blog updates from now on instead of one every time I finish an assignment at school haha

RoboCop Maquette!

Haven't been able to take any pictures of my own so I'm borrowing these from other people who went around taking pictures.
Anyways, this is my completed sculpture of my RoboCop redesign!
My concept was to create a RoboCop built to be able to take a bullet, plus some. Detroit has become a criminal empire, and it has become impossible for regular cops, or even the United States government, to tackle the firepower, and manpower, these not-so-everyday crooks possess. So RoboCop, built more like a tank than a cop, was created and sent in to clean up the city.

I wanted him to look like he was put together with slabs of metal and that when he walked, all these pieces of concrete-like plating would move and twitch around so that his body looked more organic and actually a part of his physiology. It was important to ensure he did not just look like a guy in a suit of armor. For the gun, I originally intended to go with something more subtle, but I realized that a character of his bulk and strength would need something to match. My roommate is an airforce vet and he told me that the guns mounted in the helicopters he worked on were so strong that if the bullets were to pass by you, and not even hit you, you would still ripped to shreds. I wanted this kind of power in the hands of a badass like RoboCop. The power to level buildings just by aiming his fist at it.
I wish I had spent more time on it. There was a period during our 14 week term where I didn't touch this for two weeks, and I think this sort of negligence really killed me in the end. Impossible to make up two weeks of lost time in a few short days it seems haha.. I'm still happy with the results though, glad it didn't turn out like my initial design and became something a bit more grungy?

Assassin's Creed: The Land of the Morning Calm

Key Frames ideas for my cinematic. Kind of rushed the temple and the shanty town scene, will fix them up and reupload. I'm content with the bottom two though. It's funny, in the thumbnail sketches I played with the composition/camera angles more, but in the final 4 paintings, the comps ended up being pretty boring, almost similar to each other..

Some more characters for my take on Assassin's Creed! The first is the Soldier, then the Police Captain, and finally a Resistance Fighter. Will have more characters done in the following weeks if I have time!

Before and after transformation of the character. She goes through many challenges before she finally becomes an Assassin!

These are some ideas I had for the heroine for my take on Assassin's Creed.

More environment ideas for my reimagining of Assassin's Creed. Each column is a frame/scene from my cinematic with three ideations for each frame. Still playing around with the story/mood etc and not much into the design as of yet. Hopefully things will start settling into place in the coming weeks and I'll have a more accurate idea of what I want!

These are recent environments I did for class. This version of Assassin's Creed will take place mainly in Korea during the Japanese colonialism of the early 1900's. I thought this would be a good setting for a new Assassin's Creed because there has yet to be a game in the franchise set in Asia. Also, there was a lot going on in this part of the world at the time which I think would be interesting to incorporate into a game!

To give a little summary of the idea for my game, the setting takes place mainly in Korea during The Japanese occupation which occurs during the time period of 1910-1945. There's a lot of things happening during this time period and in this corner of the world, the biggest being World War II, which is why I thought it would be a great era to base a game off of.
My story starts by showing how the main character, Arang, and her sister are forced into becoming comfort women by the Japanese and are sent to the battle camps stationed in China with hundreds of other kidnapped women during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Arang and her sister try to escape and although she does her best to protect her, her sister is killed by the pursuing soldiers. Arang is then rescued by the brotherhood of Assassin's in Manchuria and through difficult training, she gains all the skills she needs to help liberate Korea from Japanese rule.

Also, for those who are wondering, the phrase "The Land of the Morning Calm" basically is a nickname for Korea, much like "the Land of the Rising Sun" is a way to sometimes refer to Japan. Both names are derived from the characters that make up the names of each country in their respective languages and how they both translate in English. Thought this would be an interesting way to name my game :)

Digital Landscape Paintings

Photo-collage concept painting for class based on a picture I took of the Santa Monica bluffs when our class went painting there.

Painting done at Vasquez Rocks. The boy is supposed to be Cid from the movie "Looper" if the events at the end of the movie didn't happen and Cid continued on alone to become the Rainmaker. (Sorry, kind of spoiler-ish)

Painting done at El Matador Beach. Was painting something else originally, but behind me was this huge, sexy, bird-poop stained rock formation and I just knew I had to paint this instead keke

Unfinished painting I did at Joshua Tree National Park! I had been meaning to go back to it and fix it up, but have yet to do so. GODDAMN PROCRASTINATION. I find it so hard to go back to work on old things which is why I generally like to take things to the finish because I know once I stop working on something and move on, I most likely wont go back to it.

A painting done at Eaton Canyon. Really wanted to hike up to the waterfall to paint, but it was too far :(

This painting was done at a hiking trail near the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena (My roommate works there!). Some strange, and kinda nasty looking, form of plantlife (looked like foam almost) covered the stream here. There were little frogs everywhere and tadpoles in the water though, so cute!

Digital painting I did at the Arboretum in Arcadia. Very pretty place and I think the first time I've ever seen such tall bamboo shoots in real life.

First assignment from my digital landscape class from a photo provided by the teacher. will upload  more as the weeks roll by

Robocop Redesign

Some initial design work for my RoboCop redesign. Making a 15 inch sculpted maquette out of our design!! Not too happy with all the details and I haven't put much thought into all the little aspects of the suit; just hoping I'll be able to flesh all that stuff out once I start sculpting..

Will upload this post with more stuff from this project in the coming term! a little nervous though because I always seem to run into problems and make mistakes in the early stages of assignments where I have to physically make things.... Please be good to me this time life!!

Perspective Drawings

An ancient guardian protecting an ancient treasure. Just another day

A girl and her mech in an urban city slum setting

Menacing ship with a guy in the foreground trying to act all cool

My finals for Thomas's amazing advanced perspective class! We were supposed to only do two, but I decided to do 3 because I'm obnoxious like that. The downside to that is that the drawings are a bit more sloppier than I would have hoped and the perspective is a little awkward in some places :D

Violet the Blueberry and the Taffy-Tongue-Tunnel

In this scene, the children are in the inventing room and Violet turns into a giant blueberry which alerts the Oompa-Loompa's to their presence. An aerial chase scene ensues!

This is the Taffy Tongue Tunnel. In this scene, the children enter the factory by walking a path that leads to a gaping mouth door lined with taffy! Sugary pink fumes spew out of this doorway mmm

City Slums

Some paintings I did over my advanced perspective homework. Wish I could tidy them up a bit, but really don't want to touch these paintings anymore. I don't like the second one as much as the first one either, any feedback would be appreciated.

Some work from the Internship Show!

This was my first time taking part in the show and it was an awesome experience!

I also got a summer internship at Rhythm and Hues Studios! To be honest, I didn't think I would get any sort of work experience this early on in my Art Center career and to be thrown into this so suddenly worries me a bit. I'm just going to have to hope I'm ready and give it my best shot. Also crossing my fingers hoping I don't get fired the first week or something disastrous like that haaaaaaa
